A couple of items I would add to this are:

1) Be genuine. Promoting fake events could easily backfire with those who have a genuine interest in your topic and book.

2) Help others before you help yourself. When you’re social networking, help promote and support other authors’ books and real events. They’ll usually help you out in exchange without being asked.
